Summer 2010

Yes, it’s already a new season. Signs are promising.  It’s like Halloween in July.

The good:

Occult Academy is promising. High school yes, but it’s horror with a 60s/Kate Archer lead and Rahxephon style art. Whereas Strike Witches 2 is just wall to wall gratuitous crotch shots (which is what the audience demands), our heroine here wears a white miniskirt and platform shoes and still somehow completely avoids panty flashes.
Following up, High School of the Dead is freaking awesome. It’s grindy T&A and violence and gore, but it knows exactly what it is – you can’t really put grindhouse down for pandering, that’s the entire point of it.  Are you going to tell Megaladon vs Giant Squid that it’s too low brow? I don’t think so.  Production values are great, and there is surprisingly little real zombie anime – it’s all cutesy moe zombies who are all to tee-hee I’m pining for the useless male lead to actually rip throats out. Congrats to Inazuma – he’s spent so many years doing so much porn it’s good to see him finally hit it big!
Well….

Seitokai Yakuindomo is 4-panel gag manga about a high school student council (stop me if you’ve heard this before) turned into anime. It’s nothing special, but nothing especially bad either. If you need some comedy this is the only thing we have so far.

I can’t say Amagami SS is any good, but I can’t say it’s horrible either if you need your seasonal porn game turned into harem anime.

Forget It

Ookami-san and the Seven Companions is Shakugan no Shana type art with the usual action harem crap. The lead girl uses little kitty boxing gloves to beat the crap out of people. It has somehow managed to innovate and make the useless male lead even more pathetic than usual. This is what has become of the Spirit of Nippon. Banzai! Banzai! Medetashi medetashi.

Shuufuku no Campanella seems to be Aqua and Aria for simpletons. Go watch those instead.
